Last Day of School

We're on summer break! No more school 'til September! The kids had a great last day of school. I haven't quite processed the fact that Kari is no longer an elementary school kid. I wasn't emotional at all today, but now that I'm sitting here writing about it, I'm feeling a lump in my throat.

The whole school performed their annual "Hot Squad" routine. The theme this year was 80's, so all the music was from the 80's--Care Bears, Ninja Turtles, Pac Man, Ghostbusters, Blondie, Michael Jackson... The PE teacher puts it together, and we look forward to seeing what she has for us each year.

At East Orient, field day is run by the 5th graders. They work together in teams of four or five and plan a game for the other classes to play. Kari's group, with the help of their dads, created a Pac Man maze. The kids' original plan was pretty elaborate, so the dads worked with them to scale in down and make it more doable. Even with the modifications, it took an hour an a half to set up the evening before--pretty nice dads, they have!

Their station was one of the most popular ones of the day, and the kids did a great job running their game. They had a blast together, too, eating snacks and pizza, and relaxing in the shade while they waited for the next class to come to their station. The classes were timed as they raced through the mazes, and the winning class received chocolate gold coins at the end of the day. Grant and I stayed for most of the day and had a fun time with all the kids. The weather was perfect--couldn't have asked for better.
