One week after Greg's dad was flown by air ambulance down to UCSF Medical Center, he got word there was a potential lung donor. The next morning, on a Thursday, the medical team removed the donor lungs, and we waited to hear if the lungs were viable. Greg was on a plane home from Europe when all this was happening. We got word at 12:30pm that the lungs were deemed a good fit, and he was in surgery. Eric flew down to San Francisco,, as soon as we learned it was a "go" and was there by early afternoon to be with his mom.
Greg arrived back home at PDX around 11am that Thursday (my dad picked him up) and then only had four house before he had to get in the car and drive with Grant and a couple teammates to Bend for a tennis tournament. I got home from work at 3:15pm and left half an hour later with Aubrey and four of her teammates to drive to Roseburg for the girls tennis tournament. It was a quick hi-goodbye with Greg. We knew it was going to be a crazy time with him just getting back from his trip and then us going in opposite directions for the kids' tournaments for the weekend, but we didn't know there would be a lung transplant surgery happening that day, too.
At 11:55pm, after eleven and a half hours, we got the text that the surgery was done and that the doctors said it went well.
The texts flew constantly during that week and weekend--texts with Greg and the kids, texts in the Moffat Thread keeping up on updates on Dad, and then also sending pics and tennis updates for them to read to Das as distraction during those first couple really challenging days post-op. Tubes down the throat, up the nose, and all kinds of tubes and wires connected to machines are no fun at all. Surgery recovery is rough. It was a huge relief when he was able to get some of those tubes out and when he was able to talk again.
They will be down in San Francisco for three months after the surgery. It's a long recovery with lots of appointments, procedures, and medications. But it's a relief to be done with this part and encouraging to know we have hope of more time with him.
