The Arnold beach trip started June 20th, which was only two weeks after Greg's surgery. We decided to send the kids with Grandma on Wednesday, the 22nd (I met her in Hillboro to make the transfer), and then Greg and I came later on Friday night, just for two nights. They had a great time, and Greg was happy to get to spend some time at the beach, too, even though he was more limited in what he could do. The house they rented this year was right on the beach, which was so nice! The kids could just go out and play in the sand or take a walk whenever they wanted.

Two Weeks Post-Op
July 20--We had some time to waste between doctor appointments today and stared up at the clear blue sky while relaxing on a blanket in the shade, a light breeze blowing through the trees above us. Not a bad way to spend a Monday! It’s been exactly two weeks since Greg’s colon cancer surgery, almost four weeks since we found out he had a tumor. He’s doing really well! He’s eating normal foods, starting to regain strength (hasn’t walked 2 miles again since that one day, but he’ll get there soon!), and is just feeling so much better. After talking with his oncologist, we have decided to have Greg do 6 months of chemo, starting in mid-August. He should be able to work throughout, in spite of side effects, as it’s a fairly moderate regimen. We are happy to have a plan, and we both feel good about this decision.

Good news
FB Post July 13--The surgeon called with pathology results. It’s good news!! They were able to collect 56 lymph nodes (17 or 18 is considered a good sampling), and ZERO had cancer in them. Praising God and crying in relief. The cancer had gone past the lining of the colon into the tissue surrounding, which puts Greg at a slightly higher risk, but they took all that tissue out and felt they got a good margin. We see the oncologist on Friday to discuss next steps, if any are needed. This is the best result we could have asked for.

Colon Cancer Surgery
The day of surgery, Mom and Dad Moffat came to stay with the kids. We just didn't want them to be alone. Greg got all checked in at the hospital and as soon as they took him back for surgery, I went outside. A group of loyal, caring friends came to sit with me while I waited all those hours. We brought camping chairs and sat in the grass and prayed, talked, and went and grabbed lunch. While we were eating lunch I finally got the call from the doctor that surgery was done and had gone well. I had a difficult time hearing everything he said (there was a lot of static on the line), but he said Greg was well, and they were able to get the tumor out, along with 25% of his colon and a sampling of lymph nodes.
I immediately burst into tears when I got off the phone. I was thankful I was not alone. Most of the ladies headed home, but Leah and Kelly stayed and went on a walk with me around the block of the hospital while I waited for Greg to get out of recovery. I have the best friends. They were just there for me, whatever I needed. They were such a comfort.
I was sitting in Greg's room when they wheeled him in from recovery. The first thing he noticed was the clock on the wall. It had the wrong time, and that bothered him. He immediately asked the nurse to fix it. I found it quite amusing that the clock is what he chose to care about in that moment. The nurse was very sweet and went to find a new battery right away. He was pretty groggy that first day. I drove home around 9pm that night. The night nurse got him up and moving in the middle of the night, and I was glad I wasn't there for that. A lot happened in those first couple days. It was exhausting. He had some issues urinating after surgery, and he had some trauma with catheters that was no fun.
Here's an update I posted on social media a couple days in:
FB Post July 8 (2 days after surgery)--Time for an update. I’ve considered starting a separate page for this journey we’re on, but I just don’t feel ready to do that, so my page it is, for now. Feel free to snooze or hide me.
This is where I saw with friends in the grass on surgery day. |

Grant TCBC
Grant's first Trout Creek Bible Camp experience turned out different than we expected, like most things in 2020 COVID time. They switched it to a day camp format, rather than cancel altogether, for which we were VERY thankful! His camp week was the same week Greg had surgery and was in the hospital. It worked out well for Grant to be having fun and be busy during that time. Wonderful friends transported him in their carpool both ways each day, which was a huge help. He left at 8am and came back at 7:30pm. He loved it, of course, and had lots of share each night. It was also nice for me to be able to give him an update on his dad each night. TCBC was a blessing to us this year in multiple ways.
Circle Puzzle
Kari has wanted a circle puzzle for a while. She was so excited when I ordered it and so happy when it arrived! It came the week of Greg's surgery, and I believe she put it together 4 times in that week. Everyone copes with stress in different ways. I think doing this puzzle was cathartic for her. It gave her something to do and focus on, something that made sense and had order during a time that felt very much out of our control.

#Moffatstrong
FB Posts from July 5th:
A sweet, thoughtful friend created a hashtag and made this sign for us. We aren’t feeling very strong, but we have a strong God holding us up, and He has given us so many friends and family members who are lifting us up. Greg and I will be at the hospital by 8am tomorrow, with surgery scheduled for 10:30am. Assuming all goes according to plan, surgery should take 2 hours. He’ll be in the hospital 3-7 days with a 3-6 week recovery after that. We’ll know more about next steps in the coming days/weeks. I’m grateful I’m able to be with Greg at the hospital for the surgery and in the following days. We’re so thankful for the army of people helping with the kids and supporting us this week. #MoffatStrong
